Herbal medicine: The alternative safe treatment therapy

Due to advances in technology, the use of herbal medicines has been looked down upon and synthetic drugs given more concentration. However, with the rise in drug resistance, countries such as India and China have embarked on herbal medication as an alternative to synthetic drugs. Plant secondary metabolites have greatly been given consideration as alternative prophylaxis to resistant bacteria strains in recent years. Quite a number of research have demonstrated the biological effects of the secondary metabolites, providing a scientific basis for the use of herbs in traditional medicine in many ancient societies.
Here are some of the most commonly used plants as herbal medication in Kenya
Fuerstia africana - It is a perennial herb that grows to about 80cm in height with white stems and leaves. Its flowers are usually white but occasionally produce purple flowers. Vernacular names include Biriwo (Marakwet), Ekebunga baare (Kuria), Muti jwa maigo (Meru), Oloito-dor aik (Maasai), Ekebunga baiseke (Kisii) and oluwo chiel (Luo). The leaves when squeezed produce a red juice (Kokwaro & Johns 1998). Traditionally it is used to treat diarrhea, tongue infections, sores, conjunctivitis, malaria, skin infections, and STIs among other infections.
Azadirachta indica - commonly known as "Muarubaini" or neem plant, the plant has been applied in managing various ailments ranging from skin infections to gastroenteric infections with every part of the plant being useful. It has also been applied as a pesticide to control crop pests. Traditionally, it has been used to manage diabetes and athlete's foot. It is however not recommended for pregnant women as it can cause miscarriage.
Moringa oleifera - Commonly known as "moringa", the plant has been widely used in the treatment and management of cancer, stomach upset, prevention of rheumatic arthritis, diabetes asthma, blood pressure, and treating eye infections among others. It has also been proven to improve nervous and mood disorders.
Hibiscus acetosella - The plant is known for its ornamental nature and sour taste. It is considered effective in controlling blood pressure, flu, ulcers, and fever, and reducing inflammation, among others. It has also been shown to have a hematopoiesis effect.
Aloe barbadensis - commonly referred to as Aloe vera and is used for the management and treatment of various ailments such as the reduction of dental plaque, constipation, treatment of mouth ulcers, controlling blood sugar levels, and management of burns.
Plants have a wider application in health and agricultural setup that only need more research and time.
